Above Ground Pool Cleaners
Above ground pool cleaners come in all shapes and sizes. Typical types include suction driven models and stand-alone electric driven models. Each has it’s own advantages and disadvantages. Probably the most popular in-ground pool cleaners are the Polaris models. I do not recommend these for an above ground pool as it can damage your delicate pool liner. Above ground pool cleaners are specifically designed for use on vinyl liners without damage. Most above ground pools regardless of shape or size can benefit from using a good above ground pool cleaner on a regular basis.
Suction style cleaners
This style of cleaner is very popular due to their modest cost and good performance. The Hayward 500 Aqua Bug Above-Ground Automatic Pool Cleaner is always a popular choice.
This cleaner quietly pokes along the bottom of your pool in a random pattern while vacuuming. It can do a great job of cleaning even the largest above ground pools provided there is sufficient hose length. If your pool has a good bit of leaves or debris I would most definitely recommend that you use an inline leaf trap to keep your suction pump from clogging. Leaf traps are placed inline in the suction hose and allow the cleaner to keep picking up debris without premature clogging.
Another very popular above ground pool cleaner is the XtremepowerUS Automatic Vacuum-generic Kreepy Krauly Climb Wall Pool Cleaner. This is a pulse type of suction cleaner that has a great advantage as it will climb your pool walls which will help keep algae clear. These cleaners do tend to be a little noisy when compared to the bottom crawler types.
Electric style cleaners
Stand-alone electric pool cleaners are rapidly gaining traction (pun intended!) as they do a really thorough job of cleaning. They all usually have on board motors that drive the cleaner in a random pattern and to create a vacuum. Debris is trapped and contained in a filter bag or cartridge and the clean water is expelled. A big advantage of this style of cleaner is that it works independently of your suction pump. You just place the cleaner in the pool, plug it in and turn it on. They also do not clog your pools filter system as the debris stays inside the cleaner and is removed when you take out the cleaner itself. A few disadvantages are the slightly higher cost and they have to be emptied and cleaned after each use.
The Aquabot Pool Rover Junior Robotic Above-Ground Pool Cleaner is a great choice for an above ground pool cleaner. This cleaner is small and light weight and very easy to operate. I have several of my pool route customers that have these in their pools and they have been very dependable and trouble free.
The Pool Rover S2 40 is another great cleaner that will clean your pool quickly. This model has two different mesh bags to trap fine and coarse debris which is handy depending on the time of the year.
Where to get one?
Amazon of course has nearly every different style of pool cleaner on the market. They usually have the best prices and the customer reviews are good to guide you along. If you own an above ground pool I would certainly recommend any of these cleaners to make your life easier and keep your pool clean and beautiful. Have fun!
